Externship Description

Are you are interested in healthcare innovation, medical devices & services, translational research, business development, and addressing important challenges in healthcare? This externship will help you develop an understanding of how new ideas become solutions in the medical device industry. Sleep is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of health, comparable in importance to nutrition and physical activity. It affects a wide range of physiological, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions, and plays a central role in maintaining homeostasis and the development and progression of chronic disease. You will be exploring the measurable causes and consequences (health and economic) of sleep disturbances and sleep deprivation in those with ostomies, intermittent catheter users, critical care patients, and those with other chronic health conditions. This complex issue will be an exciting project for those with an interest in the intersection of medicine, health, psychology, sociology, and economics.

 

Specific Objectives

  1. Exploration of the scope and size of the problem, as well as market size and segmentation
  2. Identification of future market trends that could lead to new opportunities
  3. Identification of potential partners for entry into these markets
  4. Synthesis of findings into a set of recommendations

Deliverables include:

  1. A review and summary of the literature and other sources of information on the problems
  2. Development of questionnaires and interviews
  3. Final report summarizing the team’s process, opportunities, scenarios, and recommendations
  4. Final presentation for dissemination to stakeholders

The extern will:

  1. Learn and/or build their skills in the processes of structure literature reviews, user interviews, market research, and presentation to a wide audience of stakeholders
  2. Be part of the Breakthrough Innovation team, attending weekly meetings and working closely with subject matter experts in the various aspects of the project
  3. Work closely with mentors remotely and in-person on campus and at Hollister’s headquarters in nearby Libertyville IL, building their network and professional skills in an industry R&D environment
  4. Have ownership over the project and work independently between interactions with the sponsoring mentors
  5. Contribute to an important effort to solve unmet needs in healthcare, with the potential to make a positive impact on the quality of life for those affected.

Qualifications

Open to graduate and postdoctoral trainees in STEM, economics, psychology, technology, etc. Background is not as important as being a mission-driven, highly motivated, empathetic, candidate with a passion for solving big problems
