Externship Description
Are you are interested in healthcare innovation, medical devices & services, translational research, business development, and addressing important challenges in healthcare? This externship will help you develop an understanding of how new ideas become solutions in the medical device industry. Hollister is a leader in developing hydrocolloid adhesives to promote and maintain skin health for ostomy care products. We are interested in pushing this technology into different areas and need to better frame those potential opportunities. Extending work from the University of Chicago’s Metcalf program, the myCHOICE extern will be focused on opportunity generation for hydrocolloid materials. The externship will generate a portfolio of opportunities conducted through an evidence based standard assessment.
Specific Objectives
- Identification of opportunities as well as future market trends that could lead to new opportunities
- Identification current applications and potential partners for entry into these markets
- Synthesis of findings into a set of recommendations
Deliverables include:
- The deliverable is a white paper that focuses on opportunity sizing applications of hydrocolloid adhesives
- White Paper: Opportunities for hydrocolloid applications
- Characterize the current state of the art for identified applications related to hydrocolloid materials
- A gap analysis for identified hydrocolloid applications
- A life cycle assessment for identified applications
- Support Ideation workshop for technology push assessments of hydrocolloid materials
- Final presentation for dissemination to stakeholders
The extern will:
- Learn frameworks to assess opportunities to support innovation enterprise
- Gap Analysis
- Critical Thinking
- Innovation Processes
- Work with a Hollister associate 1:1 and with other team members
- Be part of the Breakthrough Innovation team, attending weekly meetings and working closely with subject matter experts in the various aspects of the project
- Work closely with mentors remotely and in-person on campus and at Hollister’s headquarters in nearby Libertyville IL, building their network and professional skills in an industry R&D environment
- Have ownership over the project and work independently between interactions with the sponsoring mentors
Qualifications
Technical expertise in materials, chemistry, biology (skin health) coupled with exposure or interests in innovation, marketing, new business development.
