Mentor 

Randolph (Randy) Clower, Ph.D., J.D., Sr. Director and Assistant General Counsel (Legal Dept.).

 The Taconic Legal team consists of three attorneys and two staff assistants. Randy is the sole in-house IP/Patent attorney and works remotely from his home in Western New York.

Externship Description

Externship candidates interested in intellectual property (patent) law, within the context of a biotech/pharma commercial products and service provider, will be able to immerse themselves in projects relating to IP due diligence and strategy.

Objectives

  1. Deliverables include an FTO/patent landscape assessment in written and chart form.
  2. The candidate extern will become familiar with a patent search database, one or two specific technology arenas, and reviewing the claims of various patent documents.
  3. Candidate extern will receive one-on-one instruction and training from a Registered Patent Attorney with a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology. 
  4. A weekly or biweekly meeting cadence will allow sufficient time for learning and dialogue (questions) concerning the projects that s/he will be undertaking.

Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate extern will be a senior graduate student, or post-doc in the biological sciences and is interested in obtaining their law degree or becoming a patent agent (post-graduate law students are welcome as well).
