AIBS Communications Training for Scientists Bootcamp

myCHOICE is excited to partner with the American Institute of Biological Sciences to bring you a two-day Mini-Course focused on improving your communications skills as scientists. Course instruction will consist of the following:

  • The Art of Science Communication
  • How to communicate science to non-technical audiences
  • How to tell a resonant story
  • How to prepare for and participate in a news interview, with traditional and new media
  • How to protect scientific reputation
  • How to identify and define a target audience
  • How science policy is formulated
  • How science policy influences funding and the regulation and application of science
  • How to engage effectively with decision-makers, particularly policymakers
  • How to communicate a message as a member of a larger group
  • How to prepare for and have a successful meeting with a decision-maker
  • Discussion of career opportunities for scientists in public affairs, government, and science policy

Course structure.  This course will be conducted online via the Zoom platform so that participants and instructors may all participate without congregating in shared space.The AIBS Communications Training program blends formal instruction with small group and interactive exercises that enable participants to immediately practice and hone new communication skills. Participants receive instructor and peer group feedback.

All participants in this course will require Internet access and a computer with speaker, microphone, and video camera functions. Headphones are recommended, but not required. We also recommend that individuals endeavor to participate in the program from a location with minimal distractions, including ambient background noise. We use Zoom for this program, which does not require any special software or program downloads.
