Externship Description

AI Engineering Assistant Externship

You will contribute to building and testing model pipelines, assist in developing prompt engineering frameworks for clinical and analytical applications, and help maintain and document internal AI tooling. This externship is hands-on — you will write code, run experiments, and iterate on models in a fast-moving environment where your contributions directly shape the product.

You will gain experience in: large language model integration, Bayesian modeling concepts, Python-based ML workflows, API development, and applied AI evaluation methods.

Ideal for: students in computer science, data science, statistics, or a related field with programming experience and curiosity about probabilistic AI systems.

Specific Objectives

A functional AI-powered module or tool — such as a prompt pipeline, evaluation framework, or Bayesian model integration — that is documented, tested, and ready for internal use or demonstration. The extern will present their work in a final technical walkthrough.

Tasks and Domain Knowledge

The extern will learn to:

  • Integrate large language models via API
  • Apply Bayesian reasoning concepts to model design
  • Write and evaluate prompts for structured analytical tasks
  • Work within a Python-based ML development workflow
  • Gain exposure to uncertainty quantification and how probabilistic thinking differs from standard ML approaches

Training

The extern will receive one-on-one technical mentorship from a senior AI engineer, guided readings and resources on Bayesian methods and LLM engineering, and structured code review sessions. Relevant certifications (e.g., a cloud platform or ML framework credential) may be supported depending on project needs.

Structured In-Person / Synchronous Time

A weekly one-hour check-in with their technical mentor at a set time, plus a all-hands meeting with the broader Bayesoft team. Additional asynchronous collaboration via shared tools (e.g., GitHub, Slack) is expected throughout the week.
