Company Background:

Rhaeos is a clinical-stage, venture-backed medical device company based in Chicago developing non-invasive, wearable sensors to measure fluid flow in the body. Its flagship technology, the Rhaeos Shunt Monitoring System (RSMS) enables clinicians to monitor cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt function in hydrocephalus patients—transforming care from reactive to proactive. Rhaeos operates at the intersection of biomedical engineering, clinical research, and digital health, working closely with leading hospitals, researchers, and industry partners.

Externship Description

As a Mobile & Cloud Integration Extern, you will lead the evolution of our patient-facing home application from a data collection tool into a robust wellness platform. You will focus on the “return-path” of data—engineering the technical bridge that allows our mobile app to fetch and visualize analytics stored in the cloud. If you are interested in full-stack mobile development and the challenge of building secure, high-performance data streams between iOS devices and AWS, this externship will allow you to build a high-visibility proof-of-concept that directly impacts patient engagement.

Specific objectives

• Deliverable: A proof-of-concept “Wellness Dashboard” within our React Native app that fetches, parses, and visualizes summary statistics from Amazon S3.
• Domain Knowledge: You will gain expertise in AWS Cloud integration, mobile data parsing, and creating performant data visualizations in React Native.
• Training: You will receive one-on-one instruction on managing mobile-to-cloud security and architecting scalable data pipelines in a regulated MedTech environment.

Qualifications

• Stage in Training: Upper-level Undergraduate, Master’s, or Doctoral.
• Disciplinary Background: Computer Science or Software Engineering
• Technical Skills: Strong JavaScript/TypeScript and Python programming skills. Experience working with React and/or React Native. Access to a Mac for Xcode development is required. Knowledge of AWS SDKs and basic statistical data handling (JSON/CSV parsing) is highly preferred.

Professional Qualities: Proactive communicator with the ability to translate technical requirements into functional code. Candidates should be organized, capable of documenting technical processes for future integration into the primary application, and have the ability to work independently on technical implementation
